Asana and Laimonade are not really competing for the same job, and the useful version of this page says so early. Asana coordinates a company; Laimonade produces and verifies engineering work. The comparison matters because plenty of small companies run engineering out of Asana, and it is worth being clear about what that costs.
The short answer
Asana is work management for a whole organisation — tasks, projects, portfolios and goals across every team. Laimonade does one job for one team: turning intent into engineering work a coding agent can execute, and checking what came back. If engineering currently lives in Asana, the gap is that a task written for a colleague is not a work order for an agent.
What is Asana?
Asana is work management software for coordinating work across an organisation: tasks and subtasks, projects in several views, portfolios, goals and workload reporting, priced per user with a free tier. Its strength is breadth — marketing, operations, finance and engineering in one system, with reporting that rolls up across all of them. It is not an engineering tracker, and does not particularly claim to be one.
What is Laimonade?
Laimonade is an AI Product Owner for teams whose code is largely written by coding agents. It owns the layer between deciding what to build and verifying what came back: grooming the backlog, planning a weekly sprint, handing agents work orders over the Model Context Protocol, and receiving that work back for review with a record of what the agent actually ran. It does not write code — it briefs the agents that do, and only a person marks work done.

When is Asana the better choice?
- Cross-functional coordination. When marketing, operations and engineering depend on each other, one system beats three, and Laimonade covers only one of them.
- Goals and portfolio reporting. Rolling work up to company objectives is Asana’s core competence and is out of scope here.
- Non-engineers use it comfortably, which matters more than engineers usually admit when the requester is not on the engineering team.
- It is already paid for at many companies, and adding a tool has a real cost beyond its price.
When is Laimonade the better choice?
- The item is written for a machine. A task that reads well to a colleague routinely omits the repository, the edge case and the test — and an agent cannot ask at standup.
- Prioritisation survives between agent sessions, so the next task is chosen from the backlog rather than from whatever seems plausible.
- Returned work is checked against criteria set in advance, rather than marked complete when someone is satisfied.
- Per project with unlimited members, so engineering does not pay per seat for the people who only read the board.
Can you use Laimonade and Asana together?
Usually, and it is the sensible arrangement: Asana keeps its job coordinating the company, and engineering work is defined and verified in Laimonade. Running engineering entirely out of Asana works until agents are consuming the backlog, at which point the missing detail stops being a small friction and starts being rework. If you are not running coding agents yet, Asana alone is fine and this product would read as a tracker with opinions.
Frequently asked questions
Should engineering work live in Asana?
It can, and at small companies it often does, which is a reasonable trade for having everything in one place. What it costs is detail: a task written for a colleague leaves out the repository, the edge case and the test, because a colleague can ask. Once agents are consuming the backlog, those omissions turn into rework rather than a quick question.
Does Laimonade do goals and portfolio reporting?
No. It works at the level of milestones, epics and the items under them, and it does not roll work up to company objectives across marketing, sales and operations. That is genuinely Asana’s job, and a company that needs it should not expect this product to replace it.
We are not running coding agents yet. Is this useful?
Not especially, and we would rather say so. The gap Laimonade addresses appears when something other than a person is consuming the backlog faster than a person can specify work. Before that, it reads as a project tracker with opinions, and Asana or a dedicated engineering tracker will serve you better.

The honest test is not a feature list. Point Laimonade at one project, compare the items it drafts against the ones you would have written by hand, and count how many needed a follow-up question before work could start.
